Gullah Voices Featuring Gullah Geechee Basket Weaver, Corey Alston
Today on Gullah Voices, Ms. Lynnette sits down with fifth generation Sweetgrass Basket Weaver, Corey Alston. Corey currently runs his family business in the Charleston City Market. Sweetgrass Basket Weaving has been a major part of the Gullah Geechee Culture, dating back to the days of enslavement. This coastal art form has been recognized as a South Carolina State Handcraft and has been known to be found kept alive along Sweetgrass Basket Makers Highway 17. This skill is found no where else in America and is truly a national treasure.
